එසේම අනෙක් චරිත නිරූපණය කල, පසු කාලීනව හොලිවුඩ් සිනමාවේ පතාක යෝදයන්වුන හා ඔස්කාර් සම්මාන වලින් පිදුම්ලද සහ ඒ සදහා නිර්දේශ වූ Al Pacino, Robert de Niro, Robert Duvell, Diane Keaton,  James Caan සහ Talia Shire අයගේ කැපීපෙනෙනම රංගනයක් ඉදිරිපත් කල මුල්ම නිර්මාණයවූයේත් මෙම Godfather චිත්‍රපටයි. එසේම මේ අතරින් Robert de Niro ඔස්කාර් සම්මානයෙන් පිදුම් ලබන්නත්, Al pacino සහ Robert Duvell, Talia Shire, Lee Strasberg ඒ සදහා නිර්දේශ ලබන්නත් සුදුසුකම් ලැබුවා.

තිර රචක Mario Puzo විසින් The Godfather Family Album හිදී කියන ආකාරයට චරිත වලට නළු නිළියන් තෝරා ගැනීමේදී වඩාත් ගැටළුවක් වී ඇත්තේ මෙහි චිත්‍රපටි ත්‍රිත්වය තුලම වැදගත්ම චරිතයක් වන Don Michael Corleone සදහා සුදුසු නළුවෙකු තෝරා ගැනීමයි.

James Cann හා Robert Duvell ඒ සදහා යොදා ගැනීමට මුලින් පරික්‍ෂාකලත් ඔවුන් Michela Corleone ගේ චරිතයටත් වඩා Sonny Corleone ගේ සහ Tom Hagen යන චරිතවලට වඩා උචිත වූ බව පවසයි. මෙහිදී Mario Puzo ගේ නිර්දේශය අනුව සිනමාවට ඒ අවධියේ ආධුනිකයකුවූ Al pacino ව, අධ්‍යක්‍ෂක Francis Ford Coppola විසින් තෝරාගෙන ඒ සදහා පුහුණුකර ඇත.

The big problem was to find someone to play Michael, really the most important part in the film. At one time Jimmy Caan seemed to have the role. He tested well. But he tested well for Sonny, the other Godfather son, and he tested well for Hagen. Hell, he could have played all three of them. Suddenly it looked like he wouldn’t get any of them.

Robert Duvall tested for Hagen and he was perfect. Another actor was perfect for Sonny. That left Jimmy Caan for Michael but nobody was quite satisfied. Finally the name of Al Pacino came up. He had scored a smashing success in a New York play but nobody had seen him on film. Coppola got hold of a screen test Pacino had done for some Italian movie and showed it. I loved him. I gave Francis a letter saying that above all Pacino had to be in the film. He could use it at his discretion.

එහෙත් එහිදීද විවිද බාධා මතුවුන බව ඔහු පවසයි. Al pacino ගේ ඉතාලි සම්භව්‍ය නිසා ඇමරිකානු ස්වරූපයට වඩා ඔහුගෙන් දිස්වී ඇත්තේ ඉතාලි ජාතික පෙනුමකි. එසේම ඔහු අනෙක් නළුවන්ට වඩා තරමක් කොට අයෙකුවීමද Michael Corleone ගේ චරිතය අනුව තරමක නොගැලපීමක් වී ඇත. එසේම මුලදී ඔහු මෙම චරිතයට බද්ධවීමේදීද අපහසුබවක් තිබුනත් Coppola ඔහු පිළිබද දැඩි විශ්වාසයක් තබමින් කෙසේ හෝ Al pacino යනු Don Michael Corleone වන තරමටම ගැලපීමට තරම් දක්‍ෂවී ඇත. ‍

Coppola kept saying “a good actor is a good actor. Pacino tested. The cameras were running”

But there were objections. Pacino was too short, too Italian-looking. He was supposed to be the American in the family. He had to look a little classy, a little Ivy League. Coppola kept saying a good actor is a good actor. Pacino tested. The cameras were running. He didn’t know his lines. He threw in his own words. He didn’t  understand the character at all. He was terrible. Jimmy Caan had done it 10 times better.

කෙසේවෙතත් හට හොදම සහය නළුවාට හිමි ඔස්කාර් සම්මානය සදහා නිර්දේශීත නාම අතරට එක්වීමට Godfather පළමු නිර්මාණයේදී වාසනාව ලැබුනත්, ඔහුට Godfather සිනමා ත්‍රිත්වයෙන් ඔස්කාර් සම්මානලාභියෙකුවීමේ වාසනාව ලැබුනේ නම් නැත.‍ කොහොම නමුත් Al pacino ගේ දැවැන්ත ප්‍රතිරූපය සිනමා ලෝකය තුල බිහි කිරීමට දායක වූයේ මෙම Godfather ත්‍රිත්වය බව අවිවාදයෙන්ම පිළිගැනේ.

Young Don Vito Corleone

Godfather II තුලදී Young Don Vito Corleone ගේ චරිතයට පණ දුන්නේ Robert de Niro විසින්. එහි ඔහු කල රංගනය අගයමින් ඔහුට හොදම සහය නළුවාට හිමි ඔස්කාර් සම්මානයද ලැබුනා. එහෙත් Robert de Niro නාමය අඹිබවමින් Marlon Brando ගේ සහ Al Pacino ගේ නාමයන් Godfather ත්‍රිත්වය තුල ඉස්මතුවී පෙනෙනු බොහෝවිට දක්නට ලැබුනා.

මෙම චිත්‍රපටි ත්‍රිත්වයම ගත්විට එහිදීද පළමු සහ දෙවන නිර්මාණ යුගලය බොහෝ චිත්‍රපටි දර්ශකවල පළමු හෝ පළමු චිත්‍රපටි දහය අතරට පැමිණීමට තරම් භාග්‍යසම්පන්න වී ඇත. එහෙත් දෙවන නිර්මාණයෙන් වසර 16 කට පසු තිරගතවූ Godfather III නිර්මාණයට නම් එවැනි තත්වයක් නොලැබී ඇති අතර කෙසේ වෙතත් ඔස්කාර් සම්මානද නොලැබූවද, අංශ රාශියක් සදහා නිර්දේශිත නම් අතරට එක්වීමේ වරම් ලබා ගෙන ඇත.
